Your PSARA Questions Answered
After assisting 300+ security agencies with PSARA licensing, we've compiled the most frequently asked questions and their expert answers. If you're planning to start or expand a security agency, this FAQ covers everything you need to know.
1. What is a PSARA License?
A PSARA License is the statutory authorisation under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 that allows an individual or entity to operate a private security agency in India.
2. Who needs PSARA License?
Any person or entity deploying security guards, supervisors, or related security personnel for hire must obtain a PSARA License from the State Controlling Authority.
3. How long is PSARA License valid?
Typically five years from grant, but some states (Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand) operate with 1-year validity regimes.
4. Can I operate in multiple states with one license?
No. PSARA is state-specific. Each State has its own Controlling Authority. You need a separate license for each State where you deploy guards.
5. What documents are needed?
PAN, Aadhaar, incorporation certificate, MOA/AOA, office proof, training MOU, affidavits, police verification forms, photographs, and bank proof. The exact list varies by state.
6. How long does the process take?
30–70+ days depending on the state, police verification queues, and file completeness. Digital-friendly states like Delhi process faster; inspection-heavy states like Maharashtra take longer.
7. Is training MOU mandatory?
Yes. A training MOU with a State-recognised institute is mandatory in virtually all practical filings.
8. What if my application is rejected?
Most rejections can be cured by addressing the specific defect and re-filing. Common issues include object clause inadequacy, office proof problems, and name inconsistencies.
9. Can I start operations before license grant?
No. Operating without a valid PSARA License is a criminal offence under Section 23 of the PSARA Act, 2005.
10. How much does PSARA cost?
Government fees range from ₹5,000 (one district) to ₹25,000 (entire state) indicatively. Professional documentation fees are additional.
