GST and Your Security Agency
Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance is essential for any professional security agency. Most enterprise clients require a GSTIN before awarding contracts, and GST compliance is often checked during vendor empanelment. This guide covers everything a security agency needs to know about GST.
GST Registration for Security Agencies
- Threshold: GST registration is mandatory if aggregate turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh for special category states) in a financial year. Since most security agencies cross this threshold quickly, voluntary registration is recommended from day one.
- HSN Code: Security services fall under HSN code 9985 (Support Services). The specific service code for security guard services is 998511.
- GST Rate: Security services are taxed at 18% GST (9% CGST + 9% SGST for intra-state supplies).
Invoicing Rules
- Every invoice must include GSTIN of both supplier and recipient
- HSN code (9985) must be mentioned
- SAC (Service Accounting Code) for security services: 998511
- Taxable value, GST rate, and amount must be clearly shown
- Place of supply and reverse charge applicability must be noted
Input Tax Credit (ITC)
Security agencies can claim ITC on GST paid on business inputs — office rent (if under GST), uniforms, equipment, training expenses, and professional fees. Proper linking of input invoices with output supplies is essential for seamless ITC.
Compliance Calendar
- GSTR-1 (Outward Supplies): Monthly (if turnover > ₹5 crore) or quarterly
- GSTR-3B (Monthly Return): Filed by 20th of each month
- GSTR-9 (Annual Return): Filed by 31st December of the following financial year
